Starting as ST1 without prior experience

Well, Congratulations ! on securing your ST1 post in whichever speciality you have dreamt of !
It is completely understandable to be scared and anxious about a new start and I am sure you are thinking ‘What will happen if I do not know anything , will I be good enough’ It is ok to doubt but you earned this post after a tough competition so that is definitely ‘something’.
For OBGYN , nobody is expecting too much when you are just starting as an ST1 ! Even our matrix requirement to clear ST1 are very minimal because the idea is just to get to know obgyn and pick up obgyn. But obviously you will learn and do stuff and you should show interest in learning.
You will be very supervised and supported , so do not worry . Always ask for help !
After first few months , you will enjoy things and will know stuff.
I remember my 1st ever shift was on call and I had to do a speculum on a pregnant lady ,I asked my SPR I can do speculum but I do not know what I am looking for ?? And he supported me and here we are now ! -So ask for help ! Do not be shy.
-Get to know your portfolio .
-Get to know how to look for guidelines/ articles on RCOG , NICE , FSHR etc
– Start doing your courses Basic surgical skills course , PROMPT course , e-learnings
– Start doing VEs, normal deliveries , Basic C-Sections , Try perineal repairs and instrumental deliveries (Learn, Observe, Hand on practice!) along with many other things which you will be expected to do like ECG, cannulas are favourites !

Hope it helps ! If any comments /concerns/ suggestion , please feel free to contact on insta page! Good luck!
